Ombudsman Office for Child and Youth Welfare with 270 Consultations - Saxony-Anhalt's Child Ombuds Office Sees Surge in Demand Since 2020 Launch
The ombuds office for child and youth services in Saxony-Anhalt has seen a sharp increase in demand since its launch in 2020. Consultations have risen from just 35 in its first year to around 270 in 2025, indicating the growing need for such services among people. The service, run by the independent nonprofit KinderStärken, provides confidential advice to young people and families facing disputes with social services.
The office was established in 2020 as the first of its kind in Germany, and no similar centres have been set up elsewhere since. It currently operates from two locations—Stendal and Magdeburg—with plans to open a third site in Halle in the coming years. Support is mainly offered by phone or online, though in-person meetings can also be arranged at the offices or other suitable places.
Common issues raised include poor communication, lack of involvement in decisions, and unmet legal rights. Social Affairs Minister Petra Grimm-Benne has highlighted the office's role in giving young people and families a stronger voice. Funding for the service will reach approximately €387,000 in 2026, ensuring its continued operation.
The steady growth in consultations reflects the office's expanding role in resolving conflicts. Many families turn to it when they feel overlooked or misunderstood by child and youth services. The team works to clarify rights, mediate disputes, and ensure fair treatment for those seeking help.
The ombuds office remains the only one of its kind in the country, filling a gap in support for young people and families. With rising demand and additional funding, its services are set to expand further. The planned third location in Halle will extend its reach across Saxony-Anhalt.
