Rhineland-Palatinate secures future of Mainz midwifery centre until 2028

The state of Rhineland-Palatinate has extended funding for midwifery centres in Mainz until the end of 2028. This decision secures the future of a key facility serving the city and the Mainz-Bingen district. Local officials have called the move essential for long-term planning and family support.

The extended funding follows years of state-backed support for midwifery services. Around 25 centres across the region, particularly in Rhein-Main and the Palatinate, have already benefited from programmes like the Hebammenstärkungsgesetz. Mainz and nearby areas such as Wiesbaden, Ludwigshafen, and Kaiserslautern have seen significant investment.

From 2026, the funding will rise by up to 20 percent. This increase aims to cover growing operational costs and maintain services at the Mainz centre. Despite budget pressures, the city has promised to keep supporting the initiative. However, the neighbouring Mainz-Bingen district has yet to meet its financial obligations this year. Social affairs commissioner Jana Schmöller stressed the centre's importance, calling it an 'indispensable resource' for local families.

The funding extension ensures the midwifery centre's operations until late 2028. Higher subsidies from 2026 will help address rising expenses and sustain care for families. The city remains committed to the project, though district contributions are still pending.
