Red Cross Unveils Custom Vehicle for Terminal Patients' Final Wishes
The Gifhorn branch of the German Red Cross has unveiled a new vehicle for its Wishes in Motion initiative. This project, running since 2017, fulfils the final wishes of people in palliative care. The specially designed vehicle was made possible entirely through public donations. The initiative began in 2017 with a simple goal: to help terminally ill patients experience one last meaningful journey. So far, 35 trips have been completed, each tailored to an individual’s personal wish.
The new vehicle marks a major step forward. Unlike traditional ambulances, it features large side windows and a more welcoming interior to improve passenger comfort. It can transport people in both seated and lying positions, with full medical support, including oxygen supply. There is also room for a personal wheelchair and an in-cabin sound system.
Volunteers Philipp Michel and David Skiba led the project, working closely with the board, represented by Sandro Pietrantoni. The team described the vehicle as a key achievement, bringing them closer to the project’s original mission. However, they stressed that ongoing donations remain essential to keep the service running. The vehicle meets all medical standards and was fully funded by donations. It will allow more patients to travel comfortably while receiving necessary care. The initiative continues to rely on public support to fulfil future wishes.
