Putin Unveils Bold 2036 Plan to Transform Russia's Far East

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the creation of a new socioeconomic strategy for the Far Eastern Federal District. The plan will cover development up to 2030, with longer-term projections reaching 2036. Officials must submit the draft to the government by mid-July and secure approval by early August. The outgoing strategy delivered strong results, with fixed capital investment soaring by 286% and industrial output rising by 168%. Manufacturing expanded by 223%, while housing completions grew 1.5 times annually. Mineral extraction also increased by 1.4 times under the previous plan.

The new strategy focuses on five priorities: overcoming infrastructure limitations, launching an investment and technology cycle, advancing science, improving living standards, and adapting to climate challenges. Key upgrades include railway expansion, new transshipment terminals, a port cluster for cargo, and modern warehouse complexes. For the Magadan Region, the goal is sustainable growth as a mining and logistics centre while raising living standards despite harsh conditions. The plan also targets lower mortality among working-age residents and longer life expectancy through better healthcare and education. At its core, the strategy seeks to build a high-tech, diversified economy with modern infrastructure. This aims to support population growth and strengthen the district’s role in Asia-Pacific cooperation.

The draft strategy will be reviewed by the Russian government before the August 1 deadline. If approved, it will guide development in the Far Eastern Federal District for the next decade. The focus remains on economic diversification, infrastructure upgrades, and improved quality of life.
