Putin Orders AI and Bioeconomy Overhaul in Russian Education by 2026
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a major update to the country’s educational standards. The changes will focus on artificial intelligence and interdisciplinary training for specialists in key sectors. One of the main goals is to support Russia’s growing bioeconomy industry. The Cabinet of Ministers must finalise a long-term bioeconomy strategy by June 1, 2024. This plan will include support for projects from research through to commercial production. By July 1, 2026, the government will also evaluate how well the workforce meets the needs of bioeconomy initiatives.
New educational standards will integrate AI technologies and emphasise deeper interdisciplinary training. Specialists will receive education that combines natural sciences, engineering, and economics. The Cabinet must submit proposals for these revised standards by September 1, 2026. To strengthen the workforce, the government may increase state-funded university and college places in relevant fields. Additional programmes to promote biotechnology and bioeconomics must be developed by August 1, 2026.
The overhaul aims to align education with the demands of modern industries. By 2026, Russia expects to have updated standards, expanded training programmes, and a clearer strategy for bioeconomy growth. The changes will affect universities, research institutions, and future workforce planning.
