Premium Egg Demand Soars as Ethical Choices Reshape the Market

Demand for premium eggs is climbing as more shoppers prioritise health and ethical choices. Despite higher costs, sales of these products have surged in recent years. The market now shows a clear shift towards eggs from hens kept in better conditions. In 2024, the market for premium eggs reached 634.7 billion won ($418.6 million). This marked a sharp rise of 36.6% compared to the previous year. Growth has been steady, with consumers increasingly willing to pay extra for eggs linked to improved animal welfare.

The share of hens in welfare-focused housing has also jumped. In January 2022, only 4.4% of laying hens lived in such conditions. By December 2023, that figure had more than tripled to 13.8%. This rapid increase reflects a broader trend in shopping habits. Analysts note that while demand for premium eggs is strong, global data on housing improvements remains limited. No clear figures exist to show which regions are leading this growth.

The premium egg market continues to expand, driven by ethical concerns and health awareness. With a threefold increase in welfare-focused housing over four years, the trend shows no signs of slowing. Sales figures and market growth confirm that shoppers are backing these changes with their spending.
