Portugal's bold new plan to transform its struggling healthcare system

Portugal’s president has launched the Strategic Health Pact, a new initiative to reform the country’s healthcare system. The plan seeks to create a more integrated, efficient, and fair approach to meeting public health needs. Former Health Minister Adalberto Campos Fernandes will lead the effort as its coordinator.

The pact aims to build long-term consensus while putting patients and healthcare workers at the centre of decision-making. It also focuses on improving access to medical services across the country.

The pact’s development will involve discussions with political parties and key figures in the health sector. Joana Cordeiro, coordinator of the Liberal Initiative’s parliamentary group, will represent her party in the negotiations. She has spent the last four years closely tracking health policy as vice president of Parliament’s Health Committee.

Cordeiro holds a degree in management and is currently specialising in Hospital Administration at NOVA University Lisbon’s National School of Public Health. Her background in both policy and healthcare administration adds to the talks. The negotiations will follow a flexible schedule, allowing time for input from all involved. The goal is to establish a shared vision that ensures stability and quality in the health system for years to come.

The Strategic Health Pact will shape Portugal’s healthcare future by prioritising patient needs and professional input. With experienced leaders like Fernandes and Cordeiro involved, the process aims to deliver lasting improvements. The outcome will depend on cooperation between political groups and health experts in the coming months.
