A traditional Mexican superfood has found its way into modern kitchens thanks to Pinole Blue. Founded by Eddie Sandoval, Kate Kung-McIntyre, and Kyle Offutt, the brand turns blue maize from Chihuahua into protein-rich blends, tortillas, and sweets. The trio recently pitched their business on Shark Tank, seeking investment to grow the company further. Pinole Blue’s products start with roasted and ground blue and purple maize, a staple of the Tarahumara tribe in northern Mexico. This ancient grain packs 30% more protein than standard yellow corn and is organic, non-GMO, and gluten-free. The range includes masa mix, protein balls, tortillas, and Mexican sugar cookies—all rich in antioxidants and complex carbohydrates.

The Tarahumara, known for their extraordinary endurance, can run up to 100 miles a day. Their diet, centred on pinole, inspired Eddie and his team to bring the ingredient to a wider market. A share of Pinole Blue’s profits supports the tribe, linking the business to its cultural roots. On *Shark Tank*, the founders asked for $300,000 in exchange for 10% of the company. At the time, Pinole Blue had achieved $720,000 in lifetime sales, with projections of $730,000 for the year ahead. Their pitch highlighted both the nutritional benefits of blue corn and the brand’s social mission.

Pinole Blue combines ancient traditions with modern nutrition, offering high-protein foods while supporting the Tarahumara community. The company’s appearance on Shark Tank put a spotlight on its growth potential. With a product line already generating strong sales, the brand aims to expand its reach in the health food market.
