Philippine schools embrace safer waste management with HCWM Project's Brigada Eskwela push
The Philippine Healthcare and Mercury Wastes Management Project (HCWM Project) recently took part in Brigada Eskwela at Jose P. Laurel Sr. High School (JPLSHS). Located near Quirino Memorial Medical Center, the event included clean-up efforts and awareness campaigns. The initiative aimed to strengthen waste management practices in schools and healthcare settings. During the visit, the HCWM Project team conducted activities to raise awareness about proper waste handling. They donated colour-coded bins to JPLSHS, helping students and staff improve waste segregation on campus.
Nurse Susie, the project’s campaign mascot, made a special appearance to engage the school community. She also performed the 4Cs theme song, which promotes waste reduction and sustainability. BAN Toxics, the project’s executing entity, introduced its Toxics-Free and Waste-Free Schools Program (TFSP). The programme educates schools about hazardous chemicals and encourages their safe management. Jam Lorenzo, HCWM Project Manager, stressed the need for public awareness in effective waste management. The project itself is a collaboration between UNIDO, DENR-EMB, and BAN Toxics, focusing on improving healthcare waste systems across the Philippines.
The activities at JPLSHS highlighted the importance of proper waste disposal and chemical safety in schools. With new segregation bins and educational programmes in place, the school is now better equipped to manage waste responsibly. The HCWM Project continues to expand its efforts to create safer and cleaner environments in communities nationwide.
