Pasir Gudang Hospital opens in phases after delays and staff shortages

Pasir Gudang Hospital has begun operating in phases after facing delays due to technical problems and staff shortages. The facility, originally set to open earlier, now provides limited services while working toward full capacity by September. The hospital started staggered operations late last year to serve the local community. Initially, only 41% of its 2,271 positions were filled, leaving many roles vacant. Currently, 157 of its 304 beds are in use, alongside 14 fully functional specialist clinics.

Efforts are underway to address the staffing gap. The Johor government plans to fill the remaining 59% of vacancies by September, aiming for all 304 beds to be operational by then. This push follows a decree from Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail, who ordered the hospital to become fully functional without further delay.

The hospital’s gradual expansion continues, with authorities focusing on recruitment and infrastructure. If targets are met, Pasir Gudang Hospital will reach full bed capacity and staffing levels by the end of September. This would mark the completion of its delayed but much-needed transition to full service.
