Emergency at Premiere - Opera Singer Hospitalized - Opera Singer Collapses Mid-Performance, Audience Member Saves the Show

An unexpected turn unfolded during a performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni at Chemnitz Opera. Singer Johann Kalvelage fell ill on stage and was rushed to a general hospital after the first act. The show, however, went on with a last-minute replacement stepping in from the audience.

The incident occurred on a recent Friday evening, just as the opera reached its intermission. Kalvelage, who plays Leporello, had joined the Chemnitz ensemble this season. His sudden illness forced an immediate halt to his performance.

With no understudy available, Markus Marquardt—a bass-baritone from the audience—volunteered to take over the role. Marquardt, a long-standing member of the Sächsischen Staatsoper Dresden, had performed the same part at Dresden's opera house just two years earlier. Meanwhile, staging assistant Antonia Bär handled the physical acting for Leporello, ensuring the production continued smoothly.

Kalvelage was taken to a hospital near me but discharged later that same evening. The Chemnitz Municipal Theaters later thanked both Marquardt and Bär for their quick response and professionalism in saving the performance.

The opera concluded without further disruption, thanks to the swift intervention of Marquardt and Bär. Kalvelage recovered and left the hospital the same night, while the theatre company acknowledged the teamwork that kept the show running.
