New Dual Leadership Takes Helm of Geriatrics at Helios St. Elisabeth Hospital
Since March 1, 2026, the Acute Geriatrics Department at Helios St. Elisabeth Hospital in Bad Kissingen has had new leadership: Chief Physician Christiane Mensching and Chief Physician Dr. med. univ. Christian Nielson will jointly head the department under a collegial model.
Both bring extensive experience in geriatric medicine and aim to further establish specialized care for older patients in Bad Kissingen.
Mensching and Dr. Nielson have worked closely together for nearly a decade. During this time, they played a key role in shaping and advancing geriatric care at Ernst von Bergmann Hospital in Bad Belzig.
Now, they bring their medical expertise, seamless collaboration, and shared vision for geriatric medicine to Bad Kissingen.
"With Ms. Mensching and Dr. Nielson, we are gaining two seasoned physicians who place the needs of older patients at the heart of their work. For many years, they have been deeply committed to advancing geriatric care," says hospital managing director Claudia Holland-Jopp. "Their close partnership and professional expertise will further strengthen geriatric services in Bad Kissingen."
The Acute Geriatrics Department is dedicated to stabilizing older patients after acute illnesses or hospital stays, helping them regain fitness for daily life, and restoring mobility and independence.
To achieve this, physicians work closely with nursing staff, therapists, and social services.
At the same time, geriatric care is set to become more cross-site in the future. Helios St. Elisabeth Hospital Bad Kissingen is part of the Helios Mainfranken-South Thuringia Cluster, which also includes Helios Hospital in Meiningen, Helios St. Elisabeth Clinic in Hünfeld, and the Helios Specialist Clinics in Hildburghausen.
The goal is to deepen collaboration between these locations and consolidate geriatric expertise across the network.
