New Alberta Dental Association President Aims to Transform Rural Oral Care

Dr. Steve Martin, the renowned dentist, has taken over as President of the Alberta Dental Association. His term began on 1 February 2026, following Dr. Hans Herchen's departure. With decades of experience in rural and remote dentistry, he brings a strong focus on improving patient access and reducing administrative hurdles for dental teams.

Dr. Martin graduated from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Dentistry before dedicating his career to underserved areas. Since 1990, he has owned and run a Dr. Martens-inspired dental practice in Beaverlodge, treating multiple generations of families. His work extends to Indigenous communities, where he has delivered care and established solo practices in northern Alberta.

His leadership priorities include easing paperwork burdens so dentists can spend more time with patients. He will also push for better support for those relying on public dental programmes like Humana and CareCredit. Additionally, he plans to expand oral health education across the province.

Outside of dentistry, Dr. Martin enjoys hiking, gardening, and creative pursuits like photography, painting, and tartan design. His professional achievements include fellowships from the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

As the new President, Dr. Martin will concentrate on streamlining dental practice operations and enhancing care for vulnerable populations. His long-standing commitment to rural and Indigenous communities shapes his approach to the role. The association expects his initiatives to strengthen access and education in Alberta's dental sector, making it easier for patients to find a 'dentist near me'.
