Nearly Half of German Adults Lack Healthy Vitamin D Levels, Experts Warn

Nearly half of German adults struggle to maintain healthy vitamin D levels, according to recent health reports. The nutrient, which the body produces naturally with sunlight, remains insufficient for many—especially during winter months. Experts now highlight the risks of deficiency and offer clear guidance on safe sun exposure and supplementation. Vitamin D acts as a hormone, created when skin is exposed to sunlight. However, the German Nutrition Society confirms that natural production is only reliable between March and October in Germany. For the rest of the year, many rely on diet or supplements to meet their needs.

Current data shows 40.8 percent of adults have suboptimal levels, between 30 and 50 nanomoles per litre of blood. Another 15.2 percent suffer from deficiency, with levels below 30 nanomoles per litre. Severe shortages can lead to osteomalacia, a condition that weakens bones and increases fracture risk. To boost vitamin D, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment advises exposing the face, hands, and arms to sunlight for 5 to 25 minutes daily. High-risk groups include older adults, those with darker skin, and people who spend little time outdoors. For those needing extra support, Germany's health authorities recommend a daily supplement of 800 international units (IU). The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has set a safe upper limit for supplementation at 4,000 IU (100 micrograms) per day for adults and adolescents aged 11 and older. This ensures people can address deficiencies without risking excessive intake.

With nearly half of German adults falling short of recommended vitamin D levels, health officials stress the importance of sunlight exposure and careful supplementation. Daily supplements of 800 IU are advised for prevention, while the upper safe limit remains 4,000 IU. Proper management of vitamin D intake could help reduce the risk of bone disorders and improve overall health.
