Murang'a Launches Kenya's Largest Digital Healthcare Revolution for 1.2M Rural Residents

Murang'a County has rolled out Kenya’s largest public digital healthcare programme. The initiative aims to transform medical services for nearly 1.2 million residents, most of them in rural areas. Officials say it will cut travel costs, speed up diagnoses, and improve access to specialists. The programme links 170 public health facilities through Paratus Kenya’s Essential Access platform, using Starlink satellite technology. Another 302 sites are set to join by the end of the year. The system blends telemedicine with digital health reporting, allowing real-time consultations and data submission.

A central telemedicine hub, staffed by 15 doctors, now handles hundreds of daily consultations. At full capacity, it can serve up to 600 patients each day. The initiative also strengthens disease monitoring and patient referrals across the county. The official launch takes place on 28 May 2026 at the county’s telemedicine hub. Governor Dr. Irungu Kang’ata has framed the project as part of Murang’a’s wider healthcare modernisation plan.

Residents will now access specialist care without long journeys. The digital platform is expected to streamline services, reduce delays, and expand treatment options. Nearly all of Murang’a’s health facilities will be connected by the programme’s completion.
