Mobile Student Lab transforms science education with hands-on food workshops

The Mobile Student Lab has marked its first year with a growing impact on schools across the region. Over 1,000 students have taken part in its hands-on workshops since the initiative began. The programme focuses on food, nutrition, and career exploration in science.

A recent workshop saw a 12th-grade chemistry class from Anne Frank Comprehensive School in Viersen visit the lab. Their session centred on sugar, blending practical experiments with scientific analysis. Students baked cookies using both traditional sugar and a substitute to compare textures and tastes.

The group also examined the sugar levels in common drinks. These activities helped them understand how different sweeteners behave in food. Beyond single visits, the lab offers longer-term opportunities, including internships in university nutrition science labs. Schools can tailor workshops to their needs or propose their own topics. For those short on time, the lab provides 60-minute 'Science Snacks'—compact sessions on current food and nutrition issues. Booking details and further information are available at https://www.hs-niederrhein.de/schulen-fb05/#c426545.

The Mobile Student Lab continues to expand its reach, offering flexible learning experiences for students. With over 1,000 participants in its first year, the initiative supports both education and career development in nutrition science. Schools remain free to design sessions that fit their curriculum and interests.
