Long-Haul Flights May Pose Risks for People with Chronic Illnesses
Medical Expert Reveals How to Stay Safe on Long Flights
Long flights can be hazardous for individuals with chronic conditions, particularly the elderly, a specialist warns. Prolonged immobility, low cabin pressure, and dehydration can all take a toll on a passenger's health, Dr. Alexey Khukhrev, a therapist and candidate of medical sciences, told Aif.ru in an interview.
"If someone has serious venous issues or other chronic diseases, they should prepare for a flight in advance, as it always carries risks. We recommend wearing compression stockings before departure and, if necessary, administering heparin. Alternatively, after consulting a doctor, they may start taking anticoagulants a day or two before the trip," the expert explained.
During the flight, Khukhrev advises following simple precautions: getting up from your seat periodically, stretching your legs, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding alcohol, which increases the risk of blood clots.
