Massive Minden warehouse fire triggers air quality alerts and closures

A large fire broke out in Minden's Hahlen Ost industrial area on the night of January 25, 2026. The blaze destroyed a 25x75m warehouse on Schumannstraße, housing an auto repair shop and a printing company's storage. Emergency crews worked through Monday morning to bring the situation under control.

Around 240 responders battled the flames after the fire erupted late on Saturday. The affected building, owned by an unnamed party, suffered extensive damage. Authorities later tested air quality at seven locations near the site.

Traces of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were found at two of these spots. While most results showed no immediate health risks, officials took precautions. The outdoor area of the nearby Hahlen daycare centre and the playground on Uranusstraße were closed as a safety measure.

Children at the daycare have been barred from outdoor play to prevent tracking potential contaminants inside. The city plans to clean playground equipment and replace the top layer of sand in the daycare's outdoor space. Residents living close to the fire site were also advised against building snowmen with their children.

The fire's aftermath has led to temporary closures and cleaning efforts in the surrounding area. Air quality checks continue, though most tests have not raised alarms. Authorities remain focused on preventing further exposure to any lingering contaminants.
