Man fractures larynx after suppressing a violent sneeze by pinching nose
A young man fractured his larynx after trying to stop a sneeze by pinching his nose and exhaling forcefully. The unusual injury caused immediate swelling in his neck and face, along with a loud cracking sound in his throat. Doctors later confirmed the damage included a fractured cartilage and trapped air beneath the skin. The incident happened when the man blocked his nose to suppress a powerful sneeze. The sudden pressure ruptured connective tissues in his larynx, leading to a fracture in the cartilaginous area. He also developed subcutaneous emphysema, where air leaked into the surrounding tissues.
He was rushed to Pushkino Hospital in the Moscow region for treatment. Medical staff placed him under close observation for around a week. During recovery, he was strictly told not to cough or sneeze, though speaking was allowed. His treatment included hormonal medications to reduce inflammation, antibiotics to prevent infection, and complete bed rest. The combination of drugs and rest helped the damaged tissues heal over time. Doctors have repeatedly warned about the dangers of holding in a sneeze. The sudden pressure can harm the larynx, ears, sinuses, blood vessels, or even the eyes. In severe cases, it may lead to fractures or internal air leaks, as seen in this patient.
The man was discharged after his condition stabilised. His case serves as a reminder of how suppressing a sneeze can cause serious physical harm. Medical experts continue to advise letting sneezes out naturally to avoid such injuries.
