Makati workshop tackles clearer food labels for smarter consumer choices
A workshop on food labelling will take place in Makati City on May 8, 2025. Organised by Mondelēz International and another company, the event aims to improve how nutrition information is displayed on packaging. Experts and stakeholders will gather to discuss clearer ways to guide consumer choices. Front-of-pack labels appear on food packaging to give shoppers a quick overview of nutritional content. They help people compare products, save time, and manage their diet more easily. Three common types exist: GDA, Nutri-Grade (or Nutri-Score), and Warning Labels.
GDA labels list calories, sugars, fats, saturated fats, and salt per serving. They also show how much each contributes to a person’s recommended daily intake. Nutri-Grade or Nutri-Score systems use letters or colours to rank a product’s overall nutritional quality.
Warning Labels take a different approach. They feature black stop signs or symbols to highlight high levels of sugar, salt, or fat. Each system has its own strengths, but all aim to simplify decision-making for consumers.
The upcoming 'Think Tank for Effective Front-of-Pack Labels' workshop will bring together industry players, health experts, and policymakers. Held at Odd Cafe in Makati City, the event will focus on designing labels that work best for shoppers. The workshop seeks to create more effective labelling solutions. Clearer front-of-pack information could help consumers assess products faster and make more informed choices. The discussions may influence future food packaging standards in the region.
