Mainz Expands Support for Homeless People with Mental Health Challenges

The city of Mainz is expanding its assistance programs for homeless individuals with mental health conditions. At the specialized facility "Unterkunft Plus" (Shelter Plus), the number of available spaces has been increased from ten to thirteen. According to the city, a social services position has also been added to meet growing demand.

Long-Term Integration as the Goal

The shelter is designed for people with diagnosed mental illnesses or severe behavioral issues who have not found adequate support in other care programs. Many homeless individuals struggle with mental health problems, the city notes, which often makes accepting help more difficult.

After the city council approved the concept in March 2023, "Unterkunft Plus" was established as a low-threshold facility. Since then, it has provided residents with essential care, protection, and intensive socio-educational support. The immediate priority is to ensure basic needs are met and prevent further deterioration in their living conditions. The long-term objective is to integrate those affected into the regular social support system, as outlined in Germany's Social Code (SGB IX).

First Facility of Its Kind in Rhineland-Palatinate

Key services include creating safe spaces, crisis intervention, assistance with independent living, and access to medical care. "Unterkunft Plus" is a city-run initiative and the first facility of its kind in Rhineland-Palatinate. Similar programs currently exist only in cities like Cologne, Leipzig, and Dortmund, according to local authorities.

Social support within the facility is provided by Mission Leben Lernen, a nonprofit organization. Admission is decided through a joint conference following an initial interview and an assessment of eligibility by the city of Mainz.
