Lyme disease outbreak in Nizhny Novgorod linked to tick bite surge

Nine cases of Lyme disease have been confirmed in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The infections follow a surge in tick bites, with thousands seeking medical help after encounters with the parasites. Health officials are monitoring the situation closely. The disease spreads through bites from ixodid ticks, which carry the bacteria responsible. Reports of infections have emerged in Nizhny Novgorod and six surrounding districts. Authorities have identified eight areas where tick activity is particularly high.

A total of 2,821 people have visited hospitals after tick bites. Of these, 2,065 were adults and 756 were children. The rise in cases has prompted warnings for residents to take precautions when outdoors. The confirmed cases highlight the ongoing risk of tick-borne illness in the region. With nearly 3,000 people affected by bites, health services remain on alert. Preventative measures, such as protective clothing and tick checks, are strongly advised for those spending time in high-risk zones.
