Lucerne pharmacy trials armed guards to curb rising aggression
A pharmacy in Lucerne has introduced a two-week security trial to address rising incidents of aggressive behaviour. Guards now patrol both inside and outside the premises in response to an increase in difficult encounters with certain visitors.
The pharmacy's decision comes after a noticeable rise in what staff describe as 'challenging situations'. While no official figures exist on how many Swiss pharmacies have adopted similar measures since 2023, the trend reflects broader concerns. Hospitals have also reported growing security needs, with Bern's Inselspital logging around 2,500 interventions by security staff in 2025 alone.
The trial period will test whether a visible security presence can deter disruptive behaviour. Employees hope the added protection will create a safer environment for both staff and customers. The pharmacy has not specified what long-term measures may follow if the trial proves successful.
The two-week test phase will determine whether permanent security becomes necessary. If effective, the pharmacy may extend the arrangement beyond the trial period. The move highlights the increasing pressure on healthcare and retail staff to manage aggressive incidents in public-facing roles.
