Ligue 1's accessibility gaps leave disabled fans struggling for inclusion

Accessibility in Ligue 1 stadiums remains a work in progress, with many venues still lacking proper facilities for fans with limited mobility. While some clubs have made efforts to improve conditions, a recent review highlights ongoing challenges in providing fully inclusive experiences for all supporters.

The first visit took place in Montpellier, where a designated area for people with reduced mobility (PRM) existed but was poorly maintained. The space sat next to the away fans' parking lot, with infrastructure deemed unfit for a professional club.

In Marseille, a dedicated area was set up under the parking zone, though its location raised concerns. Meanwhile, Paris FC had no specific zone but arranged for fans with disabilities to sit directly beside Toulouse FC supporters, ensuring they remained part of the group. Saint-Étienne provided a more inclusive experience, with accessible parking and seating that allowed disabled fans to watch alongside other supporters. At Monaco, a club representative escorted the group from the parking lot to a proper balcony area reserved for fans with disabilities. Toulouse FC and Ligue 1 have since taken the issue more seriously, leading to increased dialogue and a shared willingness to find solutions. The association involved has noted growing cooperation, though some stadiums still lack fully accessible seating in key areas like the away stand or general fan zones.

The push for better accessibility continues, with clubs and organisers aiming for a future where inclusion feels natural rather than forced. While progress has been made, certain situations may still require adjustments, as not all venues can be completely overhauled overnight. The ultimate test will be whether fans with disabilities feel genuinely welcomed in their communities.
