Mourning 'Assama' - Young Sudan Cheetah Dead - Landau Zoo euthanises six-month-old cheetah cub after severe health decline
Landau Zoo has euthanised its six-month-old Sudan cheetah cub, Assama, after severe health complications. The decision came following months of treatment for joint deformities and mobility issues. Zoo staff confirmed the cub was put to sleep to prevent further suffering.
Assama was hand-reared by keepers at Landau Zoo from birth. Early on, she developed digestive problems, which were later followed by difficulties moving her right front leg. Over time, her joint condition deteriorated, with specialists warning of increasing pain in the near future.
Multiple veterinary experts were consulted to assess her health. Despite their efforts, her mobility continued to decline. On January 27, 2026, the zoo made the decision to euthanise her. The procedure was carried out in the presence of her familiar keepers to ensure she remained calm.
The name of the vet overseeing her final months has not been publicly disclosed.
Assama's euthanasia was a result of worsening joint deformities that would have caused her significant pain. The zoo's decision aimed to prevent prolonged suffering for the young cub. Her case highlights the challenges faced in managing congenital health issues in captive wildlife.
