**Marc Nemitz** The Bruchsal-based startup **Klar2O** has raised 4.5 million euros in a Series A funding round. Lead investor is FMC Beteiligungs KG Bremen. The company plans to use the capital to ramp up production of its water filter technology and drive international market introduction.
At the core is the patented Smart Surface Technology, which reliably removes microplastics, nanoplastics, and so-called 'forever chemicals' (PFAS) from drinking water. Unlike conventional filter systems, this solution combines highly effective adsorption with low pressure loss. Additionally, the filters are regenerable and recyclable, making them particularly sustainable.
Nanoplastics in drinking water
The relevance of the problem is evident in recent studies: Researchers found an average of 240,000 plastic fragments per liter of bottled water in 2024, of which around 90% were nanoplastics smaller than one micrometer [NIH, "Plastic particles in bottled water"]. These tiny particles can overcome biological barriers and have already been detected in human blood, urine, and even in organs. Recent findings also show plastic deposits in the brains of deceased Alzheimer's patients.
With this funding round, we aim to revolutionize the entire drinking water market. We see Klar2O as the future standard for high-quality water filtration, and we believe it will be indispensable in the future.
As a result, nanoplastics are increasingly seen as a potential health hazard. Alongside health damage, consumers and entire economies face significantly rising costs due to the corresponding long-term effects.
From pilot phase to scaling
The Smart Surface Technology stands out from previous filters, according to the startup, due to three key features:
* **Selective binding** of nanoplastics and harmful substances * **Low energy consumption** due to low pressure loss * **Sustainability** through regenerability and recyclability
Klar2O thus addresses a global health issue that has gained significant attention in recent years but has so far been insufficiently solved.
This Series A phase is our starting signal for scaling up to launch Klar2O globally and show everyone: Now everyone can drink plastic-free water with Klar2O.
