Kazakhstan hospital probes tuberculosis case after nurse's diagnosis in Astana
A nurse at Astana’s City Children’s Hospital No. 1 has been diagnosed with tuberculosis. The case came to light in April 2026 after social media reports suggested an employee at the hospital had contracted the disease. Officials have since confirmed the diagnosis and taken steps to prevent further spread. The issue first gained attention when a user on Threads, @dbvstn, posted a question about the nurse’s department. Rumours spread quickly, with one Astana resident claiming a department head had stated a patient infected the nurse. However, authorities have not confirmed this account.
The nurse, who is now receiving treatment at the City Phthisiopulmonology Center, showed no symptoms while working. Her last fluorography screening in February 2026 returned normal results. Despite this, the diagnosis was later confirmed by Astana’s Healthcare Department.
After the case was identified, the hospital took immediate action. Sanitary and preventive measures were put in place, and close contacts of the nurse were traced. A follow-up examination of 39 staff members found no further cases of tuberculosis. Meanwhile, the private medical facility responsible for the nurse’s earlier screening will now face an official review. The hospital has completed its initial response, with no additional infections detected among staff. The nurse remains under treatment, while the facility that conducted her earlier screening will undergo further scrutiny. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
