Kalle Rovanperä's racing career halted by severe health struggles in 2024
Finnish racing driver Kalle Rovanperä has withdrawn from all upcoming races and will not compete in Japan's Super Formula series this season. The decision follows ongoing health struggles linked to a diagnosed condition affecting his balance and coordination. His doctors have confirmed he is currently unable to race safely at a professional level.
Rovanperä was first diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) in 2023. The condition causes sudden dizziness, vision problems, and balance issues, all of which interfere with high-speed racing. Despite treatment, his symptoms worsened this year, prompting further medical intervention.
Earlier in 2024, he competed in Formula Regional Oceania, with plans to progress into single-seater racing. His long-term goal had been to advance through junior series and eventually reach Formula 1. However, doctors had already barred him from driving at points due to the severity of his condition. The latest assessment confirmed that his health no longer permits safe participation in competitive motorsport. As a result, Rovanperä has chosen to step back from racing for the foreseeable future.
The withdrawal means Rovanperä will miss the entire 2024 Super Formula season. His absence leaves a gap in the series, while his focus shifts to managing his health. No timeline has been given for a potential return to racing.
