Initiative Foods recalls 'Tippy Toes' baby puree over mould toxin risks

Initiative Foods has recalled a batch of its 'Tippy Toes' apple, pear and banana fruit puree due to elevated levels of patulin. The substance, produced by mould, can pose health risks if consumed over a long period. So far, no illnesses linked to the product have been reported.

The recall affects a single lot of the baby food, sold in plastic two-packs with a best-by date of July 17, 2026. The product was distributed across the US, reaching stores in every state except Alaska.

Patulin, the mould-derived toxin found in the puree, can cause nerve damage and weaken the immune system if ingested in large amounts over time. While no immediate health issues have been reported, the company has advised customers to dispose of the product or return it to the store for a refund.

This recall follows similar incidents in recent years. In September 2024, Martin's Custom Apples withdrew organic apple juice after FDA tests detected high patulin levels. A year later, in March 2025, Mott's recalled apple juice products due to contamination traced back to Michigan processing plants. No major patulin-related recalls for other foods, such as grains or nuts, have been recorded in the same period.

The recall covers only one production batch of 'Tippy Toes' fruit puree. Customers can identify the affected product by its best-by date and packaging. Those in possession of the recalled item should follow the company's instructions for disposal or refund.
