Imran Khan's secret hospital transfer sparks outrage from family and party
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was moved to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) in Islamabad late on January 24 for a medical procedure. The brief treatment followed concerns about his eye condition, though officials later stated his vitals remained stable. His party and family, however, raised objections over the secrecy surrounding the transfer and his ongoing care.
Khan was taken from Adiala jail to Pims under tight security for what authorities described as a 20-minute procedure. The visit came after eye specialists examined him in prison and recommended urgent treatment. Despite the short duration of the procedure, his transfer reportedly took much longer than expected.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) condemned the move, calling it a 'secret transfer' that excluded his family and party leaders. They also claimed authorities blocked access to his personal doctors. Khan's son, Kasim Khan, echoed these concerns, stating that his father's treatment continues to be obstructed.
Medical sources linked to Khan's party revealed he has been diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in his right eye. Without prompt and proper care, the condition could lead to permanent vision damage. Following the procedure, Khan was returned to Adiala jail with what officials described as 'important instructions' for his ongoing care.
Meanwhile, Khan's sister, Noreen Niazi, demanded transparency, urging authorities to release his medical reports and allow visits from family, doctors, and lawyers. PTI lawmakers also filed a fresh petition in the Islamabad High Court, seeking permission to meet Khan in prison.
A government minister later stated that Khan's vitals were stable during the procedure and that he was 'absolutely healthy'. However, no official medical reports have been made public so far.
Khan remains in Adiala jail, with his family and party pushing for better access to medical care and legal support. The PTI's petition in the Islamabad High Court could determine whether his team gains permission to visit him. For now, details about his condition and treatment stay largely undisclosed by authorities.
