The Republic of Komi’s Fire Safety and Civil Defense Directorate has issued a warning as icy conditions lead to a surge in injuries. Over just three days, local medics treated 130 people for falls, with fractures, sprains, and concussions among the most common injuries. Authorities are urging residents to take extra care during the snowmelt season. The sharp rise in accidents has put pressure on Syktyvkar’s trauma centre. Five of the injured required hospital stays, while others suffered bruises, dislocations, or minor scrapes. Despite the spike in adult cases, the children’s hospital reported no ice-related injuries among young patients.

The greatest risks come from slippery sidewalks, bus stops, and steps outside homes and shops. Footwear plays a key role in preventing falls—high heels, platform shoes, and smooth leather soles increase the danger. Instead, officials recommend sturdy, flat-soled shoes with deep treads or anti-slip cleats.

If a fall happens, crouching immediately can lessen the impact. Tensing muscles just before hitting the ground may also reduce the severity of injuries. The warning comes as melting snow creates hazardous conditions across the region. Residents are advised to choose appropriate footwear and stay alert in high-risk areas. Simple precautions could prevent many of the injuries seen in recent days.
