I-580 in Livermore shuts down after mental health crisis on overpass
A major traffic disruption hit Interstate 580 in Livermore on Friday afternoon. Police activity forced the closure of all lanes in both directions, causing long delays for drivers heading into the city. The incident began around 2 p.m. near the Highway 84/Isabel Avenue junction. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) initially shut down the eastbound lanes of I-580 at Highway 84. Officers were responding to a person experiencing a mental health crisis on an overpass above the motorway. Shortly afterwards, the westbound lanes were also closed, as confirmed in a CHP social media update.
By 4 p.m., eastbound traffic had built up past Dublin and Pleasanton, stretching back as far as Rowell Ranch. Authorities urged motorists to take alternative routes, suggesting State Route 84 or I-680 towards Highway 4 to avoid the gridlock. The situation was resolved without further incident, and all lanes reopened by 3:52 p.m.
The closure lasted just under two hours, with traffic gradually clearing after lanes reopened. Drivers who had been stuck in the congestion were able to resume their journeys. No injuries or additional disruptions were reported following the incident.
