Hungary appoints its first nearly blind minister to lead social policy
Vilmos Katai-Németh has been named Hungary’s first nearly blind government minister. The newly appointed head of the Ministry of Social Policy and Healthcare will serve under Péter Magyar, leader of the election-winning Tisza party. Katai-Németh’s background spans law, martial arts, and advocacy for equal rights. Katai-Németh lost 97% of his vision at 16 due to retinal atrophy. Despite this, he earned a law degree from Pázmány Péter Catholic University in 2007. After graduating, he launched a private practice focused on equal rights.
He is also Hungary’s only aikido master with a first-degree black belt (shodan). His expertise led him to create White Sword, a self-defence system designed for the visually impaired.
With no prior political experience, Katai-Németh joined the Tisza party in 2024. During the parliamentary campaign, he won over 60% of the vote in Budapest’s 9th District.
As minister, his key goals include improving equal opportunity, healthcare quality, and education access for all citizens. Katai-Németh’s appointment marks a historic first for Hungary’s government. His legal, martial arts, and advocacy work will now shape national social and healthcare policies. The new cabinet is expected to take office under Péter Magyar’s leadership.
