How a Fujian Native Turned Fitness Into a Lifelong Passion Abroad
A lifelong commitment to fitness has shaped the daily routine of a former Fujian resident now living abroad. From early mornings in the courtyard to afternoon gym sessions, exercise remains central to their lifestyle. This dedication began decades ago and continues today with discipline and passion. Born and raised in Fujian, China, they grew up near a university where students’ daily workouts inspired a love for movement. In the 1970s, a move to Hong Kong reinforced this habit—jogging and walking to work became part of the routine.
After relocating abroad, a decision to quit smoking and alcohol prioritised long-term health. By 2010, shifting to part-time work in the jewellery industry created even more time for physical activity. Now, mornings start with light courtyard exercises, followed by afternoon gym sessions focused on calisthenics. Muscle-ups and pull-ups remain signature moves, with five muscle-ups still achievable.
Diet plays a key role in maintaining energy. Breakfasts rotate between two eggs with whole-grain bread, steamed sweet potatoes, or roti prata. Meals are simple, home-prepared, and free of fried foods to avoid excess grease. Beyond fitness, hobbies include cycling, singing, and Chinese calligraphy—sometimes even teaching classes at a senior centre.
To stay motivated, they joined Team Strong Silvers, a senior fitness group. The community provides camaraderie and shared goals, making exercise a social activity as much as a personal one. Decades of consistency have built a lifestyle where fitness, diet, and hobbies intersect. The routine—rooted in childhood inspiration—now includes structured workouts, clean eating, and creative pursuits. For this individual, staying active isn’t just about health; it’s a way of life.
