Historic Therapy Provider Saved by New Partnership After Near Collapse
The Council for Relationships, a long-standing therapy provider, has secured its future through a new partnership. Founded in 1932 as the Marriage Council of Philadelphia, the organisation faced closure due to financial struggles. A deal with Sun Point Foundation now ensures its services will continue under the same name and branding. The Council for Relationships began in 1932 under Emily Hartshorne Mudd’s leadership. For over 70 years, it ran a clinical training program for therapists and chaplains. By May 2023, the organisation employed more than 60 behavioural health providers across eight locations, including telehealth services.
Financial difficulties recently pushed the council toward shutting down. Sun Point Foundation, the nonprofit branch of Sun Point Wellness Center, stepped in to stabilise operations. The partnership will also expand access by accepting Medicaid—a first for the organisation. Neal Holmes has been named the new CEO, while Sara J. Corse, a clinical psychologist with over three decades of experience, remains chief clinical officer. Current therapy and counselling services will stay unchanged for now.
The collaboration with Sun Point Foundation provides a stable footing for the Council for Relationships. Medicaid acceptance will broaden service availability to more clients. With no immediate changes to staff or programs, the organisation aims to maintain its long tradition of support.
