Hillsborough's Senior Meal Programs Fight Loneliness with Food and Community

March 2026 marks National Nutrition Month, with this year's theme, Food Connects Us, highlighting the role of meals in bringing people together. In Hillsborough County, Florida, the Senior Connection Center, Inc. has been putting this idea into practice by running 12 meal programmes for older adults and people with disabilities. Last year alone, the organisation funded over 1.2 million meals across the county.

The Senior Connection Center operates meal sites in Tampa, Brandon, Riverview, Plant City, and other communities, including Apollo Beach, Carrollwood, and Sun City Center. Its main office is at 1837 Madison St in Tampa. These programmes offer two key services: congregate dining at senior centres and home-delivered meals for those with limited mobility.

Meals served at senior centres provide more than just nutrition. Participants receive balanced, healthy food while also enjoying social interaction, which many say is their main link to the community. For those unable to leave their homes, delivered meals ensure regular nutrition and act as a wellness check. Local dietitians have supported the *Food Connects Us* theme, emphasising its importance in Hillsborough County's meal sites. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which leads National Nutrition Month, promotes better food choices, sustainable eating habits, and physical activity. These efforts align with the Senior Connection Center's goal of helping older adults stay healthier and live independently for longer. Beyond nutrition, the programmes tackle isolation by fostering connections. Whether through shared meals at community centres or friendly visits from delivery volunteers, the services play a vital role in supporting wellbeing.

The Senior Connection Center's meal programmes reached over a million people in 2025. By combining nutrition with social support, they help older adults maintain health, reduce loneliness, and remain in their own homes. The work continues to grow, reflecting the broader message of this year's National Nutrition Month.
