Hesse now has 39 maternity wards across its cities and districts, reflecting a steady decline since 2015. This number includes 14 closures since then, with the latest figures as of December 18, 2025, showing uneven distribution across the region.

Frankfurt leads with five maternity wards, the highest concentration in the state. Wiesbaden, Gießen, and the Main-Kinzig district each have three facilities. Four cities—Fulda, Darmstadt, Offenbach, and Kassel—along with the Schwalm-Eder and Waldeck-Frankenberg districts, maintain two wards each.

Several districts operate just one maternity ward. These include Offenbach, Bergstraße, Groß-Gerau, Werra-Meißner, Limburg-Weilburg, Marburg-Biedenkopf, Hersfeld-Rotenburg, Hochtaunus, Main-Taunus, Odenwald, Wetterau, and Lahn-Dill. Meanwhile, Darmstadt-Dieburg, Rheingau-Taunus, and Vogelsberg have none at all.

Health Minister Diana Stolz (SPD), in office since January 2024, has not publicly linked the closures to a shortage of obstetric care. No official statements attribute the 14 shutdowns since 2015 to a single policy or administration.

The latest data confirms a reduced number of maternity wards in Hesse. Some areas, like Frankfurt, retain multiple options, while others have lost all local facilities. The trend continues with no indication of new openings or policy changes to address the decline.
