Hamburg's Groß-Sand Hospital to Close Despite Massive Public Protests

Negotiations to save Groß-Sand Hospital in Hamburg's Wilhelmsburg district have collapsed, leaving residents uncertain about future medical care. The planned shutdown by the Archdiocese of Hamburg has sparked protests, with nearly 10,000 signatures collected against the closure. Local politicians and doctors now warn of serious gaps in healthcare services.

The dispute centres on the hospital's ownership and its future role. The Archdiocese confirmed it would close Groß-Sand Hospital permanently by June 30, 2023. Last summer, the emergency department and surgical unit had already shut down, reducing services for the area.

Hamburg's red-green coalition had pledged to set up a 'neighbourhood clinic' on the hospital site. However, the Wilhelmsburg Medical Association argued that such a clinic could not replace a fully functioning hospital. The Social Affairs Authority, led by the SPD, then suspended confidential talks despite an apparent agreement on the purchase price. The Archdiocese criticised the authority's handling of negotiations, while SPD and Green Party lawmakers blamed the church for the breakdown. With no resolution in sight, residents continue to face delays in securing reliable medical services.

The closure of Groß-Sand Hospital now appears inevitable, leaving Wilhelmsburg without a full-service medical facility. Protests and political disagreements have failed to reverse the decision. The focus may shift to how the promised neighbourhood clinic will operate—and whether it can meet local healthcare needs.
