Germany's fitness industry is growing steadily, with membership numbers climbing to 12.3 million in 2025. This marks a 5.6% rise from the previous year, reflecting a broader shift in how studios position themselves. Many now market their services as health and wellness centres rather than just gyms.

The sector is also seeing major consolidation, as larger chains absorb smaller competitors to expand their reach.

In 2024, LifeFit acquired Elixia, one of several high-profile takeovers reshaping the market. The trend continued in 2025, with LifeFit also purchasing Fit/One and Just Fit—a Cologne-based chain with 21 locations. The latter deal received approval from the Federal Cartel Office, allowing LifeFit to further strengthen its portfolio. The group now operates 203 studios nationwide, including well-known brands like Fitness First and Barry's.

Other major acquisitions included Basic-Fit absorbing Clever Fit and all-inclusive-Fitness (AI Fitness) taking over Fit Star and Fitness Future. Despite this wave of consolidation, independent studios remain competitive by offering localised, personalised services that appeal to niche markets.

Across the country, the total number of fitness facilities has reached 9,647. The industry's growth is driven in part by a shift in branding, as studios increasingly emphasise holistic health and wellness rather than just physical training. This approach has helped attract a broader range of members, contributing to the rising numbers.

The fitness market in Germany is now more concentrated, with a few large chains dominating the landscape. Yet smaller, independent studios continue to thrive by catering to specific communities. With membership figures rising and facilities expanding, the industry shows no signs of slowing down.
