Fribourg proposes sweeping bans on vaping and tobacco ads
The canton of Fribourg is pushing for stricter rules on tobacco and vaping products. A new draft law would ban advertising in public spaces and stop free giveaways of cigarettes and e-cigarettes. The move follows similar steps taken by other Swiss regions like Geneva, Valais, and Bern.
Fribourg's proposed legislation targets both advertising and sales. If passed, tobacco and vaping ads would disappear from public areas and indoor venues. Free samples of these products would also be outlawed.
The canton is also considering a ban on disposable e-cigarettes, which critics say attract young people with sweet flavours. Health experts have raised concerns about the risks of vaping, while environmental groups highlight the waste created by single-use devices.
To enforce age restrictions, the draft includes undercover test purchases at retailers. This would check whether shops are selling tobacco and vaping products to minors. The plans are now open for public feedback after being launched by the State Council.
Fribourg is not alone in tightening rules. Geneva and Valais have already banned disposable vapes, while Basel-Stadt and Bern are discussing similar measures.
The proposed changes would make Fribourg's tobacco and vaping laws among the strictest in Switzerland. If approved, the ban on disposable e-cigarettes and tighter advertising rules could take effect in the coming months. The public consultation will determine whether the measures move forward.
