Freshpet Names Top Veterinary Nutritionist as Research and Communications Lead
Freshpet has appointed Dr. Lisa Weeth, a leading veterinary nutritionist, as its full-time head of veterinary research and communications. The move strengthens the company's focus on fresh, whole-food diets for pets. Dr. Weeth brings over two decades of experience in clinical nutrition and a long-standing partnership with the brand.
Dr. Weeth joins Freshpet after years of collaboration as a nutrition consultant. For more than 15 years, she advised the company on recipe development and nutrient profiles. Her expertise has already contributed to the creation of products like the Vital line, which features clinically backed nutritional benefits.
As one of fewer than 90 board-certified veterinary nutritionists in the U.S., Dr. Weeth holds a DVM from UC Davis and completed her residency in clinical nutrition. She also established the first dedicated nutrition service in a private referral hospital. In her new role, she will lead research projects, communicate scientific findings, and deepen Freshpet's engagement with veterinarians. Since the position was created around 2018, Freshpet has launched or published around 15–20 studies on fresh pet diets. Research highlights include improved digestibility and weight management, with findings published in journals like the *Journal of Animal Science*. Dr. Weeth will continue guiding these efforts while maintaining leadership roles with ACVIM, WSAVA, and AAVN. Dr. Gerardo Pérez-Camargo, Freshpet's SVP of Research & Development, welcomed her appointment. He emphasised the company's belief in the power of fresh, whole food to improve pets' lives. Dr. Weeth expressed enthusiasm for expanding Freshpet's scientific work and exploring how fresh nutrition impacts long-term health.
Dr. Weeth's appointment reinforces Freshpet's commitment to evidence-based pet nutrition. Her leadership will shape future research, product innovation, and communication with veterinary professionals. The company expects her role to further advance the understanding of fresh food's benefits for dogs and cats.
