"The best version of me" - Fasting in Ramadan - Frankfurt's Muslim community unites for Ramadan's spiritual reflection and shared meals

Ramadan has begun in Frankfurt, bringing together thousands of Muslims for prayer and reflection. The Abu Bakr Mosque, a central hub for the city's Islamic community, is hosting nightly gatherings and free meals for up to 2,000 people each day. For many, like youth leader Mohamed, the holy month is a time of spiritual focus and connection with others.

Frankfurt's Muslim community, numbering around 130,000, observes Ramadan with daily fasting from dawn to sunset. The Abu Bakr Mosque, registered since 1996, becomes especially busy during this period. Nightly prayers draw large crowds, while free Iftar meals—including soup, salad, a main course, and sweets—are provided to all attendees.

For Mohamed, a youth leader at the mosque, Ramadan blends routine with deeper reflection. His days remain largely unchanged, though he occasionally feels hunger or thirst. Evenings, however, are spent with family meals and catching up with old friends. He also dedicates more time to reading the Quran and self-examination, seeing the month as an opportunity for mindfulness and togetherness.

The holy month will conclude with Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast. This celebration marks the end of Ramadan and is a time of joy and gratitude for the community.

The Abu Bakr Mosque continues to play a key role in Frankfurt's Ramadan traditions. Its free Iftar meals and nightly prayers bring people together, reinforcing bonds within the city's Muslim population. For individuals like Mohamed, the month remains a period of spiritual growth and shared experiences.
