A firefighter was seriously injured during an emergency response in Hamburg's Altona district. The incident occurred after a ruptured district heating pipe released scalding water into a basement. Two others, including a tradesman, also required medical attention.

The callout began when a high-pressure heating pipe burst in the building's basement. Water at extreme temperatures flooded the area, creating hazardous conditions. A firefighter fell into an open inspection shaft filled with the scalding liquid, suffering severe burns.

Around 20 firefighters and paramedics attended the scene. A tradesman working nearby sustained burns to his hands and was treated by emergency crews. The injured firefighter was taken to hospital in a stable condition, with no immediate threat to life.

Hamburg Fire Chief Oberbranddirektor Sauermann arrived to oversee the response. After the incident, critical stress debriefing was made available to all personnel involved. No public records track similar cases in major German cities over the past five years, though isolated incidents may have occurred.

The firefighter remains in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The tradesman received treatment for hand burns, while emergency teams were offered psychological support. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the pipe failure.
