The fasting-mimicking diet involves a five-day phase of strict calorie restriction. On the first day, participants eat around 1,000 to 1,100 calories, dropping to 700 to 900 calories for the next four days. This low intake aims to trigger metabolic changes similar to those seen during fasting.
Studies have explored its effects over time. A 2017 trial by Wei et al. found that three monthly cycles reduced body fat, improved insulin sensitivity, and lowered inflammation in healthy adults. A 2021 follow-up by Longo et al. showed sustained benefits over three years, including less visceral fat and stable glucose levels in middle-aged participants. In 2023, a larger trial with 200 people reported lasting reductions in abdominal fat, HbA1c, and inflammatory markers after bimonthly cycles. However, the diet is not without drawbacks. Common side effects include hunger, fatigue, headaches, and irritability. Some people also experience digestive discomfort or difficulty concentrating. Without proper hydration and a balanced follow-up diet, nutrient deficiencies can occur. Experts stress that this method is only suitable for healthy adults in short bursts—not as a permanent eating pattern. After completing the fasting-mimicking phase, guidelines recommend shifting to a nutrient-rich, sustainable diet, such as one inspired by Mediterranean eating habits. People with diabetes or other health conditions should only attempt this approach under medical supervision.
While research highlights potential short-term benefits, the fasting-mimicking diet is not proven superior to established nutritional strategies. Its effects on weight, blood sugar, and inflammation appear promising but require careful management. For lasting health improvements, a balanced diet and professional guidance remain essential.
