Elkton's Family Birth Center to close, leaving expectant mothers in limbo

The Family Birth Center at Union Hospital in Elkton will shut its doors on June 30th. ChristianaCare, which operates the facility, cited an ageing local population and ongoing workforce shortages as the main reasons. The closure leaves expectant mothers like Kasey Conner scrambling for alternatives just weeks before their due dates. Kasey Conner, a first-time mother, had planned to deliver her baby at the centre. She had already formed bonds with the staff and felt prepared for the birth. Now, with the closure looming, she faces the stress of finding a new hospital—though she still intends to deliver at Christiana Hospital in Delaware, 13 miles away.

The shutdown will also affect 31 staff members, including two doctors and 26 nurses, who will lose their jobs. Alternative birthing locations, such as Upper Chesapeake Hospital in Harford County, are nearly an hour’s drive away, adding further strain for families in Cecil County.

Local officials have raised concerns about the lack of communication from ChristianaCare. Cecil County Executive Adam Streight criticised the handling of the closure and is now pushing for solutions to support residents. A public hearing has been scheduled for June 11th at 5 pm at the Comfort Inn in North East, MD, to discuss the impact and explore possible alternatives. The closure of the Family Birth Center leaves expectant parents with fewer options and longer travel times. With the public hearing approaching, county leaders and affected families hope to find a way forward. The meeting aims to address concerns and identify solutions before the facility officially closes at the end of June.
