Dietitian Reveals the Perfect Pairings for Healthier Shashlik Meals
A dietitian has shared advice on the best foods to pair with shashlik. Galina Lebedeva, from the Rossiya Sanatorium, explained which dishes help digestion and which ones should be avoided. Her recommendations focus on balancing flavour, health, and comfort after a meal.
Lebedeva suggests serving shashlik with fresh vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes, and cabbage. These contain fibre, which speeds up digestion and helps remove toxins from the body. Grilled items such as peppers and eggplants also work well alongside the meat.
She advises against combining shashlik with fatty foods like lard, mayonnaise-based salads, or smoked meats. These place extra strain on the liver and slow down digestion. Nuts and fresh fruit are also not recommended, as they can cause fermentation in the intestines. For better iron absorption, Lebedeva recommends adding lemon to the dish. The vitamin C in lemon boosts the body’s ability to take in iron from the meat. Fresh herbs are another good addition, enhancing flavour without overloading the digestive system.
The dietitian’s tips aim to make shashlik meals lighter and healthier. Fresh vegetables, grilled sides, and lemon improve digestion and nutrient uptake. Avoiding heavy, fatty, or fermentable foods helps prevent discomfort after eating.
