Deformed Seal Pup Defies Odds After Rescue Center Chooses Life Over Euthanasia

A seal pup with severe facial deformities arrived at the Tulen Rehabilitation Center on March 16. The young animal suffered from a crooked nose, damaged cheek and lips, and could not fully close its mouth. Despite the unusual condition, the team decided to give it a chance at survival instead of immediate euthanasia.

When the pup first arrived, vets discovered sand packed inside its mouth. The center initially suspected a mix of trauma and a possible genetic issue had caused the deformities. Normally, such cases lead to euthanasia because affected seals cannot survive in the wild.

Instead of taking drastic action, the team monitored the pup's progress. Over time, its only remaining nostril widened to help it breathe. The decision to spare its life came after securing a preliminary agreement for lifelong care. The pup's condition would usually make release impossible. But with no other options, the center committed to providing permanent support.

The seal pup now has a guaranteed home for life. Its ability to adapt—such as the widening nostril—shows resilience despite its injuries. The center will continue to care for it, ensuring it remains safe from the challenges of the wild.
