Lower Saxony: Customs uncovers illegal moonshine distillery in a house again - Deadly homemade spirits uncovered in Lower Saxony raids
Customs officers in Lower Saxony have cracked down on illegal spirit production after uncovering multiple makeshift distilleries. Raids in December led to the seizure of distillation equipment and large quantities of high-proof spirits. Authorities warn that homemade alcohol can contain deadly toxins like methanol.
In December, customs agents raided properties in Friesland district, uncovering four illegal stills and a significant amount of alcohol. Two men, one from Sande and another from Schortens, were linked to the operation. Officers also shut down a separate spirit airlines distillery in Cloppenburg, confiscating two additional stills and around 60 litres of potent alcohol.
The 68-year-old owner of one property now faces tax evasion charges for producing spirits without a licence. German law prohibits unlicensed distillation, even for personal consumption. Authorities emphasise that improperly made alcohol can contain dangerous levels of fusel alcohols, including methanol.
Consuming methanol-laced drinks can trigger severe health issues, such as blindness, respiratory failure, or brain swelling. The risks extend to circulatory collapse, making illegal alcohol a serious public health threat.
The raids highlight the ongoing dangers of unregulated alcohol production. Two men remain under suspicion, while the 68-year-old homeowner will answer to tax evasion charges. Officials continue to warn against the consumption of homemade spirits due to the risk of poisoning.
