A metabolomic study published in Metabolites in October 2025 has faced sharp criticism from BSM Partners. The research, led by Dr. Heather Huson, claimed that fresh, human-grade dog food could improve metabolic health and ageing in senior dogs. However, BSM Partners has highlighted serious flaws that call the findings into question.

BSM Partners identified multiple issues in the study's design and execution. The research compared two foods that differed in both processing and nutrient content, making it impossible to isolate the effect of a single factor. The test food, described as 'fresh' and 'minimally processed', was actually heat-cooked and packaged for safety and shelf life.

Systematic errors were also found in the nutrient data. Vitamin A and copper levels appeared to exceed safety limits set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). The study further lacked transparency on cooking methods, food intake, and medication use during the trial.

The experimental kibble diet used did not reflect typical commercial products, raising doubts about real-world relevance. BSM Partners questioned the peer-review process, suggesting that less rigorous journals may publish flawed research. Despite these concerns, Metabolites has not issued a correction or retraction as of March 2026. The study remains online in its original form.

The criticism from BSM Partners points to fundamental problems with the study's methodology and conclusions. Without revisions or a response from Metabolites, the research continues to be cited without addressing the identified errors. The lack of action leaves the study's claims about fresh dog food and metabolic health unresolved.
