A new study suggests that a collagen-enriched chocolate bar could help overweight individuals lose weight. Researchers in Spain found that participants who ate the bar before meals shed more kilograms than those who did not. The findings were published in the journal Nutrients. The trial involved 64 adults classified as overweight or obese. Over three months, half received a chocolate bar containing 10 grams of collagen twice a day. They were told to eat it 45 minutes before their main meals.
By the end of the study, the collagen group lost an average of 3 kilograms. The control group, which did not consume the bar, lost only 2 kilograms. Those eating collagen also showed small improvements in blood pressure, waist size, and liver fat levels. Scientists believe the results come from collagen's ability to absorb water and expand in the stomach. This creates a feeling of fullness, reducing hunger and overall calorie intake. Earlier research had linked collagen to benefits like better skin elasticity and joint health, but its role in weight management was less clear. The authors highlighted early satiety as a useful approach for controlling appetite in people struggling with excess weight. They also noted that long-term effects and ideal dosing still need further investigation.
The study adds to growing evidence that collagen-fortified foods might support weight loss. While the differences were modest, the collagen group experienced measurable improvements in body weight and metabolic markers. Researchers suggest larger trials could explore its potential as a simple dietary tool for obesity management.
